MAKING MONUMENT SUSTAINABLE AND REDEVELOPING

During a large-scale renovation by M+R, the exterior was largely left intact, apart from a carefully integrated (emergency) exit and ramp at the rear. The interior was changed more radically. The staircase was given a smoke-free ‘shell’ and a new lift was installed. The vaulted hall was restored and fitted with a cloakroom and large, organically shaped wall benches, behind which the modern heating is hidden. In the council chamber, the original plaster ceilings and plaster mouldings were restored.

Two pillars from 1974 were removed to improve the view of the council meeting. The roof structure is now supported by a steel beam, carefully concealed in the wall. Removing the pillars made a new layout of the council chamber possible, including a doubling of the capacity of the public gallery.
